Summative Assessment

I use a few different methods of summative assessment for children’s musical achievement. Listed below is a brief summary. For more detailed evidence, please click on the links in the sidebar on the right.

  1. Music exams are an effective means of summative assessment. The Royal School of Music offers a special type of music exam called “Music Medals”, which is intended for children who learn music in large groups. During Summer 2014, I took an online course that led toward my qualification as an Music Medals Teacher and Assessor. Music Medal exams are nationally certified by the QCF. (Click here for a graph showing the QCF graph showing the correlation between Music Medals, Graded exams, and GCSE qualifications. Music Medals QCF Levels).
  2. Two children in Year 5 (2014-15) have accelerated through the Music Medal exams, and are now pursuing their Grade 3 exam on the treble recorder.
  3. I have created a series of quizzes to summatively assess skills such as reading music and understanding musical symbols.
  4. An iPad app called “Note Trainer”, helps me to summatively assess children’s ability to read music. Children are able to do exercises with 30, 60, or 90 pitches. The children name these pitches and then receive feedback on how many they named correctly.
