In order to summatively assess instrumental performance, I have begun to enter children for music exams. This has been an exciting process for the children in the violin and recorder clubs. Children practice a series of songs and then I lead and exam in school and send the video to the Royal School of Music for moderation. Since Summer 2014, 24 children have passed their Copper Exam, 5 have passed the Bronze Exam, and 2 have passed the Silver exam. 2 children have also passed their Grade 1 exam. I started the exams with children in Years 4 and 5, but I have extended to Year 3 for recorder and Year 2 for violin. Over time, this will help our school to build a record of achievement and assessment, based upon nationally certified music qualifications.
