Assessment of musical performance is primarily formative. For example, I constantly give children feedback on how they are playing or singing a particular song, or how to improve parts of a composition. This type of assessment is difficult to evidence, as it occurs instantly within lessons.
I have piloted a type of formative assessment for the children in Year 5. Rather than maintaining exercise book as in core subjects, I have had the children in Year 5 record their learning in Powerpoint presentations. This provides me with the opportunity to mark children’s work, for children to respond, and for them to improve their work.
