Part of Standard 2 is to build planning on children’s previous experiences and knowledge. Now that I am in my fourth year at Starks Field, I have a very good grasp on children’s experiences and musical abilities, and I plan learning accordingly. Through strategic planning, I have been able to accelerate children’s musical progress, and I feel like we are beginning to see much higher standards of musical performance from EYFS through KS2.
In an effort to better understand children’s capabilities and interests, I attempt to lead guided reflection activities at least once per term in Key Stage 2. In order to help children reflect on their musical achievements, I typically create a short survey with questions to help children consider their musical strengths, weaknesses, and goals. I have also piloted the use of “I Can” statements in Year 5, as a method of pupil self-reflection.
I’m still trying to determine the best format to conduct reflection activities, and I have experimented with a few different ideas. Click on the samples below to see reflection activities from children in Years 3, 4, and 5
