Listed below is a small sample of some of the goals that the children in Year 4 set for themselves. At the end of this particular lesson, I asked children to write a few sentences about what they learned in the lesson, and what they would like to learn the next week. Some of the children’s answers were relevant extensions of what we had been learning (new pitches to play on instruments), other answers demonstrated more random musical interests. By asking the children what they would like to achieve, I have met part of Standard 1, which asks teachers to demonstrate mutual respect and to set goals for children of all dispositions.
