Providing a stimulating environment is a central part of my approach to teaching. I achieve this goal by providing a variety of sensory experiences which illuminate the visual, aural, kinesthetic, and tactile experience of music. For example, I teach instrumental performance using a mixture of visual notation and aural-based techniques. I also teach musical concepts through motion and by touch.
By providing a holistic range of experiences, children are more likely to feel that their style of learning and their musical preferences are respected and valued. This increases the pupils’ sense of safety, which is vital in order for children to experiment freely, learn from their mistakes, and share their music with others.
The links on the right show examples of how I construct this safe and stimulating environment.
